BACKGROUND & SETTINGS
Arrival is a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, based on the 1998 short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang.
It is a realistic world happen in the present time.
The climate is typical climate of US and it is a world without chaos.
Human beings live on the earth and have their own job. They work to earn money for their living expenses. They travel by car, bus, plane... They study and work hard everyday to have better life since they dont know what will happen tomorrow.
The site is roughly defined by the Continental Divide, which splits much of the state into distinct eastern and western regions(montana region) Most of Montana's 100 or more named mountain ranges are in the state's western half, most of which is geologically and geographically part of the Northern Rocky Mountains.
And suddenly in a moment, 12 black giant "eggshell" appear across the planet and land on 12 different places ( which is stated that these 12 places are the places with least lightning strike ).
Inside the eggshell, there are Heptapods which look like giant octopus. They communicate with their language (pattern). People are scared because they don't know the reason of Heptapods come to earth.
Ordinary this society is peaceful until the arrival of the alien. People stay in the temporary military camp which is set up to undergo the investigation of the spaceship.
Louise and Ian join a team to understand their language and find out why they have come to earth.
The first time communicate with the Heptapods, Louise began to have memories of future. Finally, they find out the reason of Heptapods come to earth.
Animal(bird) plays an important role in ths movie. A bird is captured and brought to the spaceship to function as indicator to the presence of oxygen.
China hold the biggest power among the countries in United Nation in this movie, when China decided to disconnected from the system and started planning to destroy the spaceship, Russian and the other countries are willing to follow.
After watching this movie, I can understand the story, but has not been persuaded.
Why Louise suddenly understand the Heptapods language?
Why only she can see the future?
The strangest part is when Louise give a call to the General , she said few sentences of words and it really succeed to stop the war that was initiated by China.
Look back to this movie, the story is creative (I like the way of Heptapods communicate) but somehow it was way too alternative to understand because it needs viewer to ponder more.
