HONESTY & DECEPTION
Honesty and deception in architecture is one of the hot topic to discuss in current epoch. It doesn’t have true or wrong , however , depends on the view from different peoples the same building will have both honesty and deception concept idea.

True that deception is a way to conceal the deceits of human ; or in architecture way , to cover the untruth of the building construct but without the balancing of deception with honesty , one particular object would be monotonous. That’s why honesty and deception taking a huge role in both architecture or lifestyle in this modern era.
Honesty and deception have a well connection with the expression of structure. One of the example for honesty building is known for the Sekeping Serendah , by architect Ng Sek San. He had expressed well about the structure he used as the medium for whole entire Sekeping Serendah area. As sir John Ruskin said , “ WE SHOULD NOT USE MATERIALS FOR THE PURPOSES THAT CONTRADICT ITS ATTRIBUTES AND PROPERTIES ” , all the materials used need to remain their own properties and purposes : timber is timber , cement is cement , brick is brick. Thus , this could brought us the real message of why the materials are used for the particular area.

Sek San also used openings and glasses to interpret the relationship between interior and exterior. With the wide openings for all the Sekeping building , peoples can have visual connection to each other ; while the uses of glass can allow penetration of sunlight into the building to give a better environment condition.
Although it’s good to cultivate ‘honesty’ in architecture but it is important to get in touch with ‘deception’ in this epoch. As time flies , lots of new materials had discovered ; and like what sir Voillet-Le-Duc said , old materials should be replaced with the new era materials because the requirements for the building had changed from time to time and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence , so it is not that suitable and inconvenient to use traditional materials in constructing modern building.

Deception building have a different way in expression of structure because of the combination of machine-use and handwork for example uses of ornamentation and covering of materials with another type of material where we can look from most of the iconic building in the 21st century , however , because of the ‘deception’ we could improve the living lifestyle to a better condition.
Only one big different between honesty and deception architecture is the relationship between interior and exterior. ‘Honesty’ will be some kind like Sekeping Serendah which we can have better visual connection with each other ; while ‘Deception’ will be like Art Science Museum where they more emphasize on the façade's decoration for both interior and exterior.
Architects cannot only see things that others can’t in physical forms, but also economic, social, and cultural ways. So it is important for us to get know with both ‘honesty’ and ‘deception’ as we need to apply both for our modern building construction that allow us to produce a brand new architecture.
