BODY & BUILDING

The relationship between architecture and the human body obviously has a long history. Architecture and human body be unity as a whole. The history of building is applying human body in architecture design. And the questions that arise when exploring this relationship are more than simply about finding the proper dimensions and placements within architectural space to “accommodate” a person and their behaviors within it.

The relationship between architecture and the human body delves deep into why those behaviors manifest in the first place, as it calls upon the experiential characteristics and qualities that spark when the two unite — impacting not only occupant behavior through the body, but also impacting occupants intellectually, emotionally, physiologically and even spiritually through the body as well. The proportion of human body is an important consideration when designing architecture. Human bodies such as size, age, gender, race and ability are important for architects to consider during design process.

“Proportion is a correspondence among the measures of members of an entire work”- Marcus Vitruvius

Human body is design by nature. It is symmetry and have own proportion, and each proportion of human have own meaning, such as the open hand from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger is just the same. In architecture, building should have its own proportion whch refer to human body. Ex: In the pycnostyle, the height should be divided into ten parts, and one of these used for the thickness of the column.

The relationship between building and body in contemporary architecture is designing a building according to the human figure which is suitable. Nowadays, architects more focus on how the people use the space, Is it suitable for the movement of human in the space. It is also designing the space based on the size, age, gender and ability of human. This make people that using the space feel comfortable. Ex: For a hospital, bigger lift and corridor are needed. Besides the movement, the feeling when the body stand beside or touch the building are considered to bring different feeling of the space.

In my opinion, buildings are metaphors of the body. Building built from structure to superstructure, body from back bone to limb. Ex: balance of human body. Balance is a basic principal of architecture.  Nowadays, many buildings have proportion and balance to make it look harmony. Balance is not necessary can be found in structure or elements, it might be function, space or idea.

Science Museum Valencia City

This Science Museum was designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava for letting know in an interactive, and entertaining way everything related to life, science, and technology. It is unique in the world due to geometry of the building, structure, the materials used and the constant presence of nature.

The structure look like human bones which are repeating and covering. The science museum is worth to see for both its structure and the programme of the project.

Architecture and human body are link together and can affect each others. Architects need to design with more considerations to make it better.
