TO COMPARE THE STORY OF THE MOVIE TO ONE OF THE EIGHT BASIC STORIES LEARNT IN CLASS

The story start with an opening that Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) said
‘I used to think this was the beginning of your story’
in a daylight.
It goes on with a few pieces of memories or kind of flashback that appeared in her mind.
Showing a girl had gave birth to this world, the happiness that felt in heart, and desperation when the daughter’s death; love and despair described with surgical precision.
Time goes by when we move to another scene, an alien ship lands in Montana with another 11 vessels in the shape of black egg shell, stop by in another 11 locations all around the world.
This probably summarize the whole story, but this is not what the usual answer the viewers think of.
As a linguistics expert, Louise work with the military and a scientist named Ian seek to find out why the aliens come to their land. And there is a very simple question they try to figure out –
what do you want?
Those aliens that they called- Heptapods looks like a giant octopus speaks with sound of echo and forms spray ink in shape of circle. Louise find out that the communication will progress faster in the written language rather by talking.
As she gets closer to the answer, Louise able to convey all the symbol ink to different kind of words. The biggest problem come when one country find out there’s a word ‘offer weapon’. China was so desperate to drive away and destroy the ship.
They felt Insecure and it lead to the war that humans always want. Mankind is doomed. We’re so paranoid, selfish to people and try to protect ourselves first rather than giving trust to others when things happen. Humans are afraid the arrive of these visitors would make a huge change in the future world or it will bring the earth down to the end- abandon and desperation. Will human get through all these problems?
Louise always passed out and dreamed a girl that herself even don't know who is that. she was terrified and sad
Besides, Louise also facing predicament when her attempts to communicate with the aliens cause painful, illuminating echoes in her consciousness.
She had her darkness in days.
Those images and scenes that appeared in her mind keep running out in times. The story lead to a question for viewers, is that the past or the present of Louise? When did this happen?
Soon we find out that Louise was given a gift. A gift that was so precious to someone but somehow it brings painful also.
She had a gift of foresee.
She can see the future of her whole life and find out that she had a daughter. Although her daughter died in teen ages because of cancer and her husband leaved her alone and nowhere to find.
And so, with the discovered of this gift, Louise used it to stop the war that initiated by the General of china. She had a call with the General and eventually succeed to stop the war and saved the life of the aliens. It also saved human's life.
‘If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?’
‘Maybe I would say what I felt more often. I don’t know’
The movie end with some conversation of Louise and Ian and those future images that Ian would never see. This is the part that most touching because it is sad and sorrow.
You know all the things that will happens, but you have no ideas or power to change.
This is a great movie. It’s a film that forces viewers to reconsider what makes us truly human, and it also shows that when the communication breaks down, the fear that appears over everything.
So maybe we should learn to be a better person to make a better world. Try to embrace those unknown things and always be thoughtful and give trust.
From all above, I will category ARRIVAL into Orpheus.
There are some common scenes where the character had loss of something personal, and they were gifted too.
Orpheus a legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greek religion and myth. The major stories about him are centered on his ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music, his attempt to retrieve his wife, Eurydice, from the underworld, and his death at the hands of those who could not hear his divine music.
It’s Orpheus - the tragedy of the loss itself or the search which follows the loss.
