PROPORTION & ORGANISATION

In today’s lecture , we have read about three articles , arguing about the views on proportion & organisation in architecture and how they influence the architecture world .

We have seen a lot of buildings with incredible form, fascinating outlook and impressive construction method , but do they really capable to withstand the every kind of pressures ( function of building , circulation of human , user’s convenience and comfort ..) those buildings are ignoring the basic terms in architecture theories : Proportion & Organisation .

The subject of architectural proportional systems in the history of architecture, the topic of this special collection of essays in Architectural Histories, has long been characterized by a fundamental ambiguity: the word and concept of proportion simultaneously signify two unrelated and in some ways opposite meanings. Proportion can refer to ratios, or it can refer to architectural beauty. Proportion is relating to the ratio , and ratio is affecting the aesthetic of the building.

Organisation refers to the arrangement or placements of the spaces / architecture elements such as columns , balcony ..etc Organisation is more towards the flow of user inside the building , or the relationship with the outside ( nature / landscape)

Proportion & Organisation play an important role , in today’s architecture , by remaining the balance. (balance between structures , balance between the spatial quality & the nature , balance between the space and the Practicality)

Proportion deciding the dimensions or the sizes of the building elements or spaces , while the dimensions of the spaces will be taken as the considerations of the organisation .Thus , these two term are inter related to each other,Organisation will affect the proportion too .

Furthermore, proportion brings the visual effect of the relationships of the various objects and spaces that make up a structure to one another and to the whole and organisation role as the connection of the building and the human ( users ). Take a simple example, architect arrange the spaces in pan view , every intersection area is said as the linkage of the spaces ( in common spaces) . Proportion act as a guideline for the architect to design( from the beauty and the construction view) , and organisation act as a circulation principle for the spaces.

To my mind , proportion & organisation is a must in relating to human habitation & functioning. By applying the correct proportion ( or I can say a nice proportion) and a suitable organisation ( placement) , an optimum living environment would be create ( how to definite optimum , a building which suits its function and its easy for human to access , to get into , to circulate inside , and with stable form - which relating to proportion.)Without these two term as guidance , building is metaphor as a structure , just a frame ,without feeling , without life.

By looking at the facade, form is like many single blocks , joining together and connecting with each other. Proportion can be easily seen towards the height of entrance and the height of buildings and dimensions of elements. Organisation is interesting , and its logic since Frank Gehry took these two terms as basic consideration when designing.

Thus , a nature balance and harmony have been created by these two terms. The human circulation inside is simple , easy to be understand by exploring his plan design .(organisation)

In a nutshell, i think that Proportion and organisation is controlling the harmony of spaces and users. As Le Corbusier once said, " To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects.”

The function of the space , achieved by the arrangement of them , and the objects , definitely means by the proportion of them ( the dimension , the size , every small details about the object..) Thus, a fuctionable building or spaces are only exist when fullfilling all the requirements that Le Corbusier stated before.Since the outlook is a golden ratio, moreover the interlocking of every single spaces are excellent , the building is to be said as a success .Brighten up the name of architects , the site , and the user's life .
