ORNAMENTATION
Ornament in architecture, usually used to cover the naked construction and for purposes of decoration and embellishment. Architecture was dressed-up construction, ornament is to add beauty to a structure.
Large figurative elements such as monumental sculpture and their equivalents in decorative art are excluded from the term; most ornament does not include human figures, and if present they are small compared to the overall scale.
The materials of architectural ornament include stone, wood or precious metals, formed with plaster or clay, or painted or impressed onto a surface as applied ornament; in other applied arts the main material of the object, or a different one such as paint or vitreous enamel may be used.
Vernacular ornament would be derived from materials, construction, regional climate and culture.
"ORNAMENT IS NO CRIME'' - Joseph Rykwert
Ornament was not supplying that which was good in itself with its essential complement but covering the unacceptable.
Ornament in architecture today still remain the function of covering the construction and add beauty to a structure, but being almost uniformly flat and taking a simple geometric form. Their patterning does not destroy the overall mass of the building and it is some simple or repeated pattern that comfortingly.
Architectural ornament nowadays is a combination of cultural, environmental and also artistic task.
Ornament is the language through which architecture communicates with a broader public. We are able to know the culture of certain place from the architecture, ex: pitch roof, decorative openings in Malaysia.
Ornament can bring nature to people. When we cannot have immediate access to nature, the next best thing is to create ornament. Ornament often mimics nature directly, ex: organic and natural forms copied from plants and animals. The materials of the ornament will also decide how the building blend in to the nature.
Technology is also important to architectural ornaments. New construction and manufacturing processes have made the return of ornament economically viable.
In my opinion, ornament in architecture is a must. Moreover, It need to be more detail and attractive. I think the next argument will be the detailing of the ornament.
As you know, 'face' is very important.
