CONTEXT & BUILDING

Context, an external element that will influences the building that we design, either in physical (land contour, structures) or non-physical (weather, culture, economic). Context is useful in contemporary architecture because its ability in determine the architectural style, material selection for building and how will be the site layout looks like before starting a project. By understanding the context of the site, we able to produce a good building design (effective design).
The role of context include environment design and planning related to the project. Starting from 18th century, overpopulation had became the main issue which causes insufficient of land and space for people to live in.  Hence, city planning and space planning will be the solution to overcome the problem : creation of skyscrapers able to accommodate many people and its area able save more space.
Context also predominantly in economical issue. Different country has their different economy condition, so this will become an impact which will slow down the building design process and development ; given the psychological impact to all practitioners in construction industry. This difference makes the practice of contemporary architecture is different from place to place, thus prefabricated components are widely use in architecture as it helps to reduce labor costs and save time.
This green work-studio, located at Guangzhou,China was transformed from the central part of a vacant plant-house built hill-side facing south that used to be a warm house for flowers. It utilizing a lightweight steel structure to support the pitched roof canopy that acts as a giant glass house, enjoying the constant illumination of natural light throughout the day. This building able to be constructed using large amount of glass material because it is facing to the south where sunlight to penetrate in are least and still able to keep the interior environment warm. The architect,
O-office Architects planned to construct an intimate and small-village-like work environment under the plant-house’s original building skin, maintaining the natural daylight and ventilation in the new working cluster to achieve a low-energy-cost green spatial infill.
To minimize the space used, the internal space is vertically divided into two which is the ground part is mainly for the big design team to work closely together while the upper floor serve as several small design and management teams to work independently. The open shared space of the “village”, all naturally ventilated, connects the ground from the reception atrium to the upper floor by a large concrete stairs with greenery. Trees are plant from the ground work studio to the upper floor, which produce a semi-outdoor gardening experience for the space. The whole construction relied on on-site process because of the inconvenient transportation to the site. Local timber and hemp-twist technique were used during the project’s finishing phase.
Jura Residence by Lewandowski Architects looks to set a precedent on the Wentworth Estate of how good quality, contemporary architecture can maximize the opportunities of a site in both design approach and planning terms. The design vision for the house was to create a series of moments capturing vistas both inside and outside, offering a textural and inspiring environment through the building.
The sound of falling water and ability to touch and feel the natural stone as you step into the building stimulates the experience of natural. The plan consists of two wings of accommodation that are connected across all three floors by a central bridge whereas this link provides not only a functional and physical connection between spaces but also allows the users to always feel connected to one another by sound and sight; this connectivity of the senses can often be missing in larger properties but was key to creating a building that could function as a home.
The property offers three floors of living accommodation ; two floors above ground and a substantial lower ground floor which is flooded with natural light. The site offers just over 5 acres of land which is again unique for the location. All the spaces were consciously designed to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, while remaining honest to the contemporary roots of the architecture, carefully conceived and crafted to respond to the site’s individual features and potential.
“… MUST BECOME THE SCIENCE AND ART OF CATALYZING AND NOURISHING THESE CLOSE-GRAINED WORKING RELATIONSHIP, ” remarked by Jane Jacobs telling us that combination of science and art is the primary requirement for a good city. I personally agree with it as it is important for a us to response corresponding to the contexts in all elements (climatic, environmental, cultural and political) because it determine the production of an effective design. Thus, within this linkage we able to establish a communication channels between buildings and the people surrounding.
