NATURE & CONSTRUCTION
Nature is an important emotional elements within surrounding environment where the human seeking for to ensure themselves from sun, wind and rain (hot and cold condition) ; an architecture guidelines in designing process, which affects various aspect of architecture and buildings formation.
“ IT IS THE SAME IN ARCHITECTURE AS IN ALL OTHER ARTS: ITS PRINCIPLES ARE FOUNDED ON SIMPLE NATURE ” stated by Marc-Antoine Laugier. Throughout the years, nature always been took as an inspiration for designing the daily usage of human being, including architecture. “By imitating the natural process, art was born”, hence architecture is an impact of people looking for shelter from the components of nature. Nature is important in architecture today as it act as a link bridge to connect human and space as well as building and environment. Within this connection, we able to create a better living environment for human.
Basically, nature predominantly a design metaphor : by metaphor every aspects of nature to express out senses and feelings throughout the interior and exterior spaces of a building as well as its own elements. It approaches building forms to the elements in nature to be familiar for human being. Different concept of metaphor can come out with different designs which capable of creating new understanding and successfully achieve human needs and satisfaction.
Art Science Museum
- MOSHE SAFDIE
The architecture is said to be a form reminiscent of a lotus flower. The base, which is embedded in the earth and surrounded by the Marina Sand Bay’s water and a giant lily pond (metaphor a living lotus plant in a pond) ; the flower-like structure petals, rise towards the sky with varying heights, each crowned by a skylight which draws in daylight penetrating the base and illuminating the galleries within. The museum is entered through a free-standing glass pavilion whereas the lower and upper galleries is connected with large escalators and elevators to allow the public can freely move to anywhere. The dish-like roof collects rainwater and drains it through an oculus, creating a waterfall through the center of the museum that feeds an interior pond.
The tips of each petal have an opening which is to maximize the sunlight to penetrate in which allow the interior space become brighter. The asymmetrical museum structure, reaches upward into the skyline is supported by an elaborate steel lattice structure. This assembly is supported by ten columns and tied down at its center by a basket-like sculptural centerpiece that accommodates the asymmetrical forces that the building’s form generates. As elsewhere in Marina Bay Sands, the building aims and achieves the highest levels of sustainability.
Applesauna
- NOA
The key element of the design was the circle of the apple throughout the year and the sauna refers to repose. The building was surrounded by numerous apple trees and nature - blends harmoniously into its landscape and serves as an extension to the garden. “ It was essential to us to use the charm of the surrounding garden and nature as an interpretation for the architecture … The new sauna totally melts with the surrounding landscape ”, its appearance is like a cave in a grass-covered hill, it opens widely to the nature outside with a panoramic window, evolves into a mystical and intimate space at the interior, allowing the guests to enjoy the surrounding nature view and at the same time, giving the guests a feeling of freedom.
The interior is kept pure and dedicated to the elegance of the materials : the earth-coloured concrete walls pursue the lines of the wooden slats of the sauna benches and highlight the sloped form. Interior lighting system was used by a concrete made lamp. The spa area consists of a sauna with changing rooms and a shower on upper floor as well as a relaxing space on the lower floor – always viewing the greenery of the apple trees. The entire sauna area is dedicated to the repose period and is diving into the nature in the trust sense of its word.
In the nutshell, nature is an important sources to all of u. Although the concepts inspired by nature are changing as the time passed regarding the changes of human’s lifestyle, but the expression of senses and feelings are the same important as before. Hence, architects and designers should research every aspect of nature even deeper to increase the optimization in the design works and thus achieve a balance between nature and construction to create a harmony living environment.
