SIMPLICITY & COMPLEXITY ?
Select a recent design project on which you are working. Discuss the characteristics of the project in regards to simplicity and complexity, in light of the discussion and texts introduced today. What attitudes regarding simplicity and complexity does your work illustrate
I would like to use my project 3 design in my last semester as my choice for today topic.
This project is an opportunity to promote the culture and history awareness of Kampung Baru as well as bonding generations. We need to design a whole new museum for the local that dedicated to community as well as visitors, and provide friendly environment to encourage other academic research.
I named this museum as ‘ Go Between ‘ that brings out the feeling of bonding between community, the interaction and the relationship.First, this local museum has its own special and unique characteristic. As what I learnt in today’s class, It is never an easy thing to design a building for each architecture. You need to get through many process and difficulties that might bring you down toward the end.
Marcel Brueuer also mentioned, characteristics of simplicity are flat roof, wide openings for light ,air and sunshine, minutely studied practical floor-plan, light colour.
The design of the museum is very simple and clarity.
The most important part that I want to mention is it blend in with the nature of the site and it provide an urban park for the villager over there. Every design comes with simple shape and lines FIRST, after that is the form and functions and at last is the final presentation of the whole design. I classify this museum as simplicity because when you look on the appearing, it gives you a strong feeling that this museum is simply fine and basic but inside it consists of some interesting space planning and the hard work to complete. It doesn’t not have the very exaggerate pattern at all.
It was defined by lines, square and rectangular and the texture that spike people eyes. It is simply that the sympathy we feel for each does not take the form of making us want to use either as a medium for the utterly different purpose of the present day.
Picture on the left show the process of my design throughout the semester. it is a final site model.
I learnt a lot in today’s class and I have understood better and deeper about the architecture. They are some characteristic that I related to the simplicity that I had mentioned. The museum was designed in more opened space to welcome and as an invitation to the public.
The materials that used in this museum are mostly timber and concrete to remain the original and give an image that could blend into the site. The colour used is simply white and more close to nature. Because as you know, the site that we choose at kampung.
When you walk inside this museum, you will pass through a series of galleries and there are antique that relate back to the history. There is a long open path way on the rear part, it let visitors to look toward all along the way. It is widely open so it can let visitor to enjoy the scenes when pass through the urban park and have some flesh air to breath.
The urban park is the important role that play in this building. It provides different spaces and environment to different stage of human so that they could enjoy and relax when they visit this museum.
The space inside the museum have a connection. There is less opening in the entire museum. The purpose of this is to encourage more interactive between the visitors. People used to walk and talk to the person that they already know. I want to give an image that this museum look as a unit rather than separated spaces.
In conclusion, every design has their own meaning and it take so many years and process and to finalize it. A building should be design in sense of clarity. It take a lot of effort to achieve, To sum up again: clarity to us means the definite expression of the purpose of a building and a sincere expression of its structure. Original text from the article: the principle of clarity, expresses itself in the technical and economic fields of architecture, through emphasis on structural laws and practical function. We should adapt the knowledge that we gain and fully use in our future design.
