NATURE & CONSTRUCTED 2

Getting back to discuss with my semester 03 design project , which suits this topic indeed can express the word : place based. Place- based design is important in architecture today because it gives identity of a space or contain area which responsive to the environmental psychology.

The design project I did before is an Epic Centre located in Jenjarom, Selangor. Jenjarom is a town located in Kuala Langat DistrictSelangorMalaysia.

Jenjarom has a significant Chinese (Hokkien) population. It was one of the new villages, set up in the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency to segregate the rural Chinese villagers from the Communist insurgents within Malaysia under the Briggs plan.

This project is to build an epic centre that can exhibit and show the history and culture of jenjarom to public.

The main exhibition gallery symbolises the history of Jenjarom from the beginning up to today, the shape has been inspired by the main road of Jenjarom which is the right hand part of the building . The upper part is to show that upon completion of this museum, the surrounding of this site will become more lively.

The linear design of this museum has been created to connect the site as well as the surrounding  residential area, the center part is elevated to not block the view. It has been designed so that people can see the activities that is being carried out around the site.

This site is windy throughout all the year. So I design this building elevated and open to bring in the wind, villagers can experience the feelings of staying at their own home.

The material I used for this museum mostly are timber and brick which make my building blend into my site. These material can bring out the feeling of old building which can best represent jenjarom. Visitor can feel the sense of belonging when visiting this museum as it can bring out the feeling of house.

I categorized my design as place-based building. I considered the history, culture and human activities happened in Jenjarom. The outlook of this building combined the site activities and the material used in this building can bring the feeling of this new village. So, when visitors go in the museum, they will get the feeling about the building that is somehow “just-belonged” or that its placement on the site, its form, materials, or even colours were somehow “just right” and suitable.

“To be human is to live in a world that is filled with significant places: to be human is to have and to know your place”- E. Relph

It is important as the design will be easily accepted by the locals as if it belongs to the place and interaction between architecture, site, local cultural and history.
